Sayblee inspiration for the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King

We hope everyone has enjoyed a Happy and Blessed New Year. Today, as we reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. we are reminded of the universal struggle for justice that has been happening around the world. As an African immigrant to America from Liberia, Dr. King’s visit to Ghana during the Ghanaian Independence Ceremony had a tremendous impact not only on all the people of Africa and American Civil Rights Movement, but also for all future generations of oppressed people around the world.

While in Ghana, King told radio listeners, “This event [Ghana’s Independence Ceremony], the birth of this new nation, will give impetus to oppressed peoples all over the world. I think it will have worldwide implications and repercussions—not only for Asia and Africa, but also for America… It renews my conviction in the ultimate triumph of justice. And it seems to me that this is fit testimony to the fact that eventually the forces of justice triumph in the universe, and somehow the universe itself is on the side of freedom and justice. So that this gives new hope to me in the struggle for freedom.”

Growing up in Liberia, Sayblee’s parents were deeply saddened at the news of Dr. King’s assassination, but raised to her to know the story and struggle of this man, and many others including Nelson Mandela during apartheid in South Africa, and his promise of a land where all of God’s children could live together in peace and harmony.

Sayblee’s journey from Liberia to Europe and eventually settling in America over 20 years ago has always been blessed by this promise and vision for universal justice and equality. She credits her ability to have started her business to the struggles endured by African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement, and takes pride in being a Black Owned Business in America. Like Dr. King, and the many people of color who have toiled and worked hard to achieve their vision, Sayblee is committed to building her brand with respect for all of her clients and the many people who have supported her business throughout the years.

Today we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and continue to build upon his vision of the Promised Land. Although we have been faced with ongoing challenges for equality and justice, we remain committed to treating everyone with respect and kindness, as well as contributing to the diversity and inclusion of all people in the many spaces we find ourselves. We are truly blessed and grateful to represent this diversity at the Coconut Grove Farmer’s Market, and the Yellow Green Market before the onset of this Global Pandemic.

As we move forward into this new year of 2021, we will draw from the inspiration and legacy of Dr. martin Luther King Jr., keeping our eyes on the horizon as we set out with peace, respect, and kindness for all of our fellow Americans and people of the world.
